Mycorrhizae

Mycorrhizae

Mycorrhizae is when fungi and plant roots help each other. It’s crucial for trees and crops. Two types: ectomycorrhizae for trees, arbuscular mycorrhizae for various plants.

Ectomycorrhizae cover root surfaces but don’t enter root cells, aiding nutrient uptake. Arbuscular mycorrhizae enter roots, forming arbuscules for better nutrient exchange.

Mycorrhizae help plants get more nutrients and water, improve soil structure, water retention, aeration, and nutrient cycling. They make plants more resilient to drought, pathogens, and toxins.

In farming, mycorrhizal inoculants with specific fungi can enhance plant growth and nutrient uptake when applied to roots during planting.
