Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid

Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid is a metabolite of Delta-9-THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. The body processes Delta-9-THC through oxidation, hydroxylation, and conjugation reactions. Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid forms when Delta-9-THC oxidizes at the 11th carbon, adding a carboxylic acid group (COOH). This happens primarily in the liver due to enzymatic processes.

After consumption, Delta-9-THC transforms into various metabolites, including Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid, which the body eliminates through urine and feces. Importantly, Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid is inactive, lacking the psychoactive effects of Delta-9-THC. Detecting it in urine or blood can indicate recent cannabis use but doesn’t necessarily mean intoxication or impairment.

It’s vital to note that limited research on Delta-9-THC-11-oic acid exists, and we need further studies to understand its role in Delta-9-THC metabolism and cannabis pharmacology.
