What Is Quarter?

Quarter is a cannabis buying term that usually means a quarter ounce, or about 7 grams. The word is most common in flower sales, where quantity is often discussed in ounces and fractions of an ounce rather than only in grams.

It is basic retail language, but it matters because cannabis buying still runs on weight shorthand in many markets.

In cannabis language, quarter refers to a quarter ounce of product, most often flower. The term belongs to consumer and retail vocabulary rather than cultivation, extraction, or chemistry vocabulary.

Why Quarter Still Matters in Cannabis Buying

Quarter matters because weight shorthand still shapes how cannabis is sold. A shopper comparing an eighth, a quarter, and a half ounce is comparing price, value, and intended use all at once.

The term also survives because it is faster than saying 7 grams every time. Even in dispensaries that label products in grams, staff and customers may still talk in ounce fractions because the language is familiar.

In most conversations, quarter implies flower unless another product type is stated. It is most common on menus, jar labels, price discussions, and everyday buying talk.

Quarter vs Eighth

A quarter is larger than an eighth. In standard cannabis buying language, an eighth is about 3.5 grams, while a quarter is about 7 grams.

That distinction matters because these are two of the most common purchase sizes in retail flower. Someone buying an eighth is often looking for a smaller trial amount, while someone buying a quarter is usually buying more for regular use or better value per gram.

Quarter vs Dosage

A quarter is a buying amount. Dosage is how much is consumed at one time. The two words answer different questions and should not be mixed together.

One is about the quantity purchased. The other is about the quantity used. A person can buy a quarter and still consume very small doses across many sessions.

What Quarter Does and Does Not Tell You

Quarter does not mean a strain, a potency level, or a product quality tier. It tells you how much cannabis is being bought, not whether the flower is strong, fresh, indica-leaning, or premium.

It also does not always describe the packaging format in exactly the same way in every market. Some stores prepack quarter-ounce jars or bags, while others weigh the amount at purchase. Still, the default meaning remains stable: one quarter of an ounce, usually in flower sales.

Where You Will Hear Quarter

The term appears most often in:

  • flower menus
  • dispensary checkout language
  • conversations about value and purchase size
  • comparisons between loose flower amounts
  • retail packaging and weight labels

It appears less often in cultivation vocabulary because it belongs mainly to buying language.
